I feel like the story of Tu B'shvat was started as some kind of a practical joke and then continued over the years (why does this sound familiar?...Tom Cruise (cough)). The birthday...of the trees? Are we supposed to sing to them?
When I got to work today, I was greeted by a nice spread of all kinds of fruits and nuts. That's pretty amazing...don't remember it happening in the States. I seriously couldn't identify a lot of them. There was a long orange thing that wasn't a carrot...papaya apparently. Who can recognize a fig? I couldn't. Hard to make out all of them but there they are, on my plate. Chag sameach, everyone.
What happens when the tree turns 21? Do you pour a bottle of beer on it?

Is that what happened to you when you turned 21? ;-)
I'm not divulging any details. If any of my friends who were there are reading this, they can answer that question!
Tu B'Shvat=Chag L'Ilanot.
All Ilanas and Ilans get a vacation day.
My vacation day was spent getting pampered at a spa.
Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
What you meant to say was... "When the tree turns 21, do you dunk it in Mexican Martinis..."
I get queasy just thinking about it...
A La Valerie Plame disclosures:
I can neither confirm nor deny any rumors about Benji's 21st birthday, nor can I comment about the exceedingly large quanities of tequila which immediately preceeded numerous trips to the toilet, forced consumption of water, and wishes of "just put me out of my misery". And I won't talk, even under pain of torture.
I think when a tree turns 13 in Israel, it is pegged with various dried fruit as people sing, "Simontov U'mazeltov" and then, when it turns 21, a bottle of Outsider (Israeli APPLE flavored sparkling beverage)is smashed over its trunk.
It's funny, the other day my roommate had bought a tray of nuts and laid it on the counter... I knew it was Tu B'Shvat and thought it was the ubiquitous date, fig, papaya and nuts tray you can find throughout Israel at this time of year. But... to my surprise, it was shaped like a football for upcoming Super Bowl Sunday.
